Reflections on “Global Leaders for Social Justice” |
IMOW Executive Director Clare Winterton was thrilled to participate in last month’s “Global Leaders for Social Justice” program, run by the Global Women Leader’s Network. The week-long program brings together social justice leaders from around the world to expand their visions, leadership skills and capacity, as well as build community and momentum for social justice causes. This year’s participants included leaders working on issues from maternal health in Tanzania to women’s political participation Kenya and environmental justice in Pakistan. “I built incredible connections and insights that will enrich the museum’s exhibitions and programming, as well expanding my own perspective on possibilities for the museum” said Clare. |

Economica Explores How Politics Makes a DifferencePolicy Changes, Activism and Political Theory Are All Part of the Global Online Exhibition |
Economica: Women and the Global Economy, explores several factors that affect women’s place in the global economy. One of the most important is politics. From activism to policy to political theory, politics and economic power are inextricably linked. (For a fantastic overview, read Masum Momaya’s essay, “Governments Must Step Up So Women Don’t Have to Step In” and watch the “Bread” multimedia slideshow on the Basic Rights theme page.) Here are a few of the other compelling stories in Economica that explore how politics affects women’s roles in the global economy:

News from the International Congress of Women’s MuseumsIMOW’s VP for Exhibitions and Programs Recaps Museum Conference |
Catherine King, the museum’s Vice President for Exhibitions and Programs has just returned from Buenos Aires where she represented IMOW at the 3rd International Congress of Women’s Museums, held from May 24-25. This 2010 convening was co-hosted by the women’s museums of Argentina, Costa Rica, Mexico and Peru, and representatives from six continents attended! Although diverse in locations, size and area of focus—from history, to art to culture—all museums in the network espouse a commitment to improving the visibility of women’s contributions to society. Many women’s museums are dedicated to the experiences of women in specific regions, but IMOW is unique in its focus on amplifying the voices of women worldwide. As a museum with a global focus, IMOW is especially excited to continue its engagement as a part of this growing network and we look forward to bringing you news from our sister museums around the world. Catherine has been named the network coordinator for North America and looks forward to engaging women’s museums from the US and Canada. Dear Friend, You are part of a complete reinvention of the idea of a museum. The International Museum of Women is a museum that is making history. Please give now to strengthen our revolutionary work. Instead of looking only to the past, IMOW blends history with a focus on looking forward to a world where women are embraced as true equals. Instead of just presenting the issues, we provoke our audiences to jump in, get involved and take action. And instead of focusing on just one community, we have a presence everywhere you can find an internet connection, reaching over half a million people in more than 200 countries every year. With your support, we launched a groundbreaking online exhibition about women and the global economy, Economica, bringing women’s voices to center stage. Now we need to go deeper – launching new content that will explore women’s reactions to the economic crisis and roles in economic rebuilding. These new projects will provoke audiences to ask why women are still constrained from achieving their true economic potential, and to take action to fuel women’s economic rights. We have more important work to do and we need your help. Please make a donation now to be on the cutting edge of creating a better world for a new generation. Sincerely,
Clare Winterton |
