Welcome to Raeshma Razvi for Young Women Speak the Global Economy!

IMOW is delighted to welcome Raeshma Razvi as the lead project coordinator for our upcoming project, Young Women Speak the Global Economy. Raeshma is a filmmaker, writer and educator who has worked extensively with youth worldwide, helping them to tell their stories in many creative mediums. Raeshma has worked as the artistic director for the Documentary Project for Refugee Youth in New York, helping young refugees from West Africa and the Balkans create award-winning documentary films about their experiences; has facilitated conflict-transformation sessions with the organization Seeds of Peace; and is the founder of Silkworm Media, an organization dedicated to using the media and literary arts to bridge people and communities and inspire reflection and change.

Raeshma’s experience will be invaluable as IMOW embarks on our next Project of Economica, Young Women Speak the Global Economy. The global online exhibitionwill explore young women’s hopes, challenges and ideas at a critical moment for the global economy. Groups of women aged of 18-25 from Denmark, the Philippines, the United States and the Sudan will contribute to the exhibition, sharing perspectives on the economy, careers, well-being and professional life with each other and with the museum’s global online audience. Reflections on “Global Leaders for Social Justice”

IMOW Executive Director Clare Winterton was thrilled to participate in last month’s “Global Leaders for Social Justice” program, run by the Global Women Leader’s Network. The week-long program brings together social justice leaders from around the world to expand their visions, leadership skills and capacity, as well as build community and momentum for social justice causes. This year’s participants included leaders working on issues from maternal health in Tanzania to women’s political participation Kenya and environmental justice in Pakistan. “I built incredible connections and insights that will enrich the museum’s exhibitions and programming, as well expanding my own perspective on possibilities for the museum” said Clare.

Economica: What Exactly is the Care Economy?

Check out These Stories About the Impact of the Care Economy

image

From Woman Kind by Maria Acha Rodriguez

Many of us have probably heard the terms “microeconomics,” “supply and demand” and “gross domestic product.” But what have you heard about the “care economy”? Though the care economy is often ignored by mainstream economists, feminist economists, leading thinkers, and artists consider the care economy—the informal, frequently unpaid or underpaid care work most often done by women—increasingly important to a vital, healthy global economy. Check out these stories from Economica: Women and the Global Economy about the care economy and learn more today!

  • ART: Woman Kind>> Artist María María Acha Rodriguez presents a series of digital photographic collages that celebrates women who work in the care economy and attempts to bring their contributions front and center.
  • PODCAST: The Cost of Care>> Put a price tag on care and you’ll realize that women play a fundamental role in the economy, and one that’s been neglected by economists for decades, says feminist economist Nancy Folbre.
  • NEW VISIONS: Creating a Caring Economy>> It’s time to bake a new economic pie. It’s time to redefine the economy by better including women’s contributions and by acknowledging the vital work of caring for people, says author Riane Eisler.

The day begins at City Hall for the Women?s Equality Day Event at noon.

AUGUST 25, 2010

3 - 5 p.m.      Open conversation with others and vintage movies will continue until Museum closing at 5:00

Liz?s mother, Bella Abzug, paved the way for the 1977 National Women?s Conference by authoring a bill which provided its funding. With a $5 million budget (less than a nickel for each female in the country), regional meetings were then held in each state to choose delegates and to vote on potential planks for inclusion in the National Plan. She presided over the conference and also pressed Congress to designate August 26 as Women?s Equality Day in 1971. The date was selected to commemorate the 1920 passage of the 19th Amendment to the Constitution, granting women the right to vote.

The Bella Abzug Leadership Institute?s (BALI), co-founded by her daughter, Liz Abzug, mission is to utilize the signature leadership skills of the late New York Congresswoman Bella S. Abzug to mentor and train high school and college women. To help develop the confidence and skills they need to be effective, dynamic and visionary leaders as well as active and creative participants in civic, political, corporate and community life.

Women on the Move: The First National Women?s Conference
8/3/2010 to 8/31/2010

Women on the Move: The First National Women?s Conference, images from the First National Women?s Conference in Houston in 1977 by the official photographer Diana Mara Henry.

Diana Mara Henry, a graduate of Radcliffe in 1969, was the official photographer for the first National Women?s Conference held in Houston, Texas, in 1977. In this role, she had unlimited access to many of the crucial women of the 1970s women?s movement. Henry captured this important moment in history with the candid images that can be seen within the exhibition. Vivid photographs of former first ladies, feminists and many other women attendees help document this event. Many of these photographs have appeared in books, magazines, government documents, and even a play. Read more?

Economica Explores How Politics Makes a Difference

Policy Changes, Activism and Political Theory Are All Part of the Global Online Exhibition

Economica: Women and the Global Economy, explores several factors that affect women’s place in the global economy. One of the most important is politics. From activism to policy to political theory, politics and economic power are inextricably linked. (For a fantastic overview, read Masum Momaya’s essay, “Governments Must Step Up So Women Don’t Have to Step In” and watch the “Bread” multimedia slideshow on the Basic Rights theme page.) Here are a few of the other compelling stories in Economica that explore how politics affects women’s roles in the global economy:

    • OPINION: The Politics of Economics>> Women’s Studies professor S. Charusheela discusses human investment capital, the politics of economics, and what she considers feminist economics.
    • ACTIVISM: Economics and Public Health>> Leading public health expert Indira Chakravarty talks about the simple public policies that could help women in developing countries, such as India, reach their full economic potential.
    • ART: Bounty>> Artist Sa Espasyo Ni Kim uses unusual materials to make an irreverent visual statement on consumption and economic values in the land of plenty, the United States.

To submit to Economica, visit our Call for Submissions page for more information. Explore all of the stories in Economica, and leave a comment or recommend your favorites!

News from the International Congress of Women’s Museums

IMOW’s VP for Exhibitions and Programs Recaps Museum Conference

Catherine King, the museum’s Vice President for Exhibitions and Programs has just returned from Buenos Aires where she represented IMOW at the 3rd International Congress of Women’s Museums, held from May 24-25. This 2010 convening was co-hosted by the women’s museums of Argentina, Costa Rica, Mexico and Peru, and representatives from six continents attended!

Although diverse in locations, size and area of focus—from history, to art to culture—all museums in the network espouse a commitment to improving the visibility of women’s contributions to society. Many women’s museums are dedicated to the experiences of women in specific regions, but IMOW is unique in its focus on amplifying the voices of women worldwide.

As a museum with a global focus, IMOW is especially excited to continue its engagement as a part of this growing network and we look forward to bringing you news from our sister museums around the world. Catherine has been named the network coordinator for North America and looks forward to engaging women’s museums from the US and Canada.

  • Dear Friend,

You are part of a complete reinvention of the idea of a museum.

The International Museum of Women is a museum that is making history.

Please give now to strengthen our revolutionary work.

Instead of looking only to the past, IMOW blends history with a focus on looking forward to a world where

women are embraced as true equals.

Instead of just presenting the issues, we provoke our audiences to jump in, get involved and take action.

And instead of focusing on just one community, we have a presence everywhere you can find an internet

connection, reaching over half a million people in more than 200 countries every year.

With your support, we launched a groundbreaking online exhibition about women and the global economy,

Economica, bringing women’s voices to center stage.  Now we need to go deeper – launching new content

that will explore women’s reactions to the economic crisis and roles in economic rebuilding. These new projects

will provoke audiences to ask why women are still constrained from achieving their true economic potential, and

to take action to fuel women’s economic rights.

We have more important work to do and we need your help. Please make a donation now to be on the cutting

edge of creating a better world for a new generation.

    Sincerely,

    Clare Winterton
