The idea, hosting and supervision:

Iwona Dadej, historian, PhD researcher at FU and Wissenschaftszentrum Berlin für Sozialforschung, working on “The German and Polish Women’s Education Movement before and after the First World War - Transnational Contacts and Ties” under the project “Transnational Struggles for Recognition. Women and Jews in France, Germany and in Poland in 20thCentury” at the Centre of Social Science (Wissenschaftszentrum Berlin für Sozialforschung)

Anna Nowakowska - Wierzchos, archivist of the Archives of New Records in Warsaw (Archiwum Akt Nowych), PhD student at Tadeusz Manteuffel Institute of History of the Polish Academy of Sciences (Instytut Historii Polskiej Akademii Nauk), working on the dissertation “The History of Maria Konopnicka Association of Polish Women in France 1944-1950” about Polish communist women from the labour emigration of the 20s-30s of the 20^th century.

The format of meetings:

• every eight weeks, a discussion on a chosen topic with invited experts;
• regular presence in the Internet on our website and on Facebook;
• lobbying, presentations, publications in print media, participation in feminist and historical meetings (Feminist Academic Congress in Slubice, November 2009; an article in the quarterly “ZADRA”; participation in the coming Polish Social Forum).

Our guidelines:

• to promote the history of women’s movement among people of little historical education in an accessible manner that does not require any specialist knowledge;
• to include Herstory in the mainstream of historical research by demonstrating its interrelations with other historical phenomena and by inviting specialists and experts in their respective fields who do not necessarily display any feminist awareness.

Our target groups:

• members of general public interested in non-mainstream issues;
• journalists: we would like to built a network of informers-experts to make it easier for media people to get access to competent specialists in a given field.

Our tactic:

• talks with experts, with the overall idea that history meets sociology / cultural studies, i.e. we do not stand for only monodisciplinary meetings of young historians, but we look for and involve in our activities people doing similar research in other periods or researching similar subjects in other disciplines, to allow for comparison across disciplines and across time;
• mini-lectures with multimedia presentations.

Some of the topics to date:

• The opening discussion;
• Women of Parliament: Women’s participation in the legislative structures of the Second and the Third Polish Republics (1919-1939 and 1989-2009);
• Out of hunger onto the streets. Women’s protests and demonstrations of an economic nature;
• Two panel discussions related to the following publications: “Działaczki społeczne, obywatelki, feministki… Samoorganizowanie się kobiet na ziemiach polskich do 1918 r. (t.1) i po 1918 (t.2)” [Social activists, citizens, feminists... Self-organisation of women on Polish territories before 1918 (vol. 1) and after 1918 (vol. 2)]
• The women who built the People’s Republic of Poland;
• Women’s archives in Poland and in the world.

Our plans for the future:

• one day conference organised in cooperation with other women’s organisations interested in studying the past of Polish women and the roots of our native feminism – possibly with a post-conference publication;
• active part in the realisation of the idea to build the Museum of Polish Women;
• another series of meetings – our objective is to reach a larger audience and to broaden the format of our meetings, including – for example – readings of texts.

Das frauen museum wiesbaden zeigt in der Ausstellung silent view Arbeiten der ersten Preisträgerin des Christa Moering-Stipendiums der Stadt Wiesbaden, der Künstlerin und Fotografin Nicole Ahland.

Nicole Ahland beschäftigt sich in ihren Arbeiten mit dem Erforschen von Raum und Ort. Die Künstlerin arbeitet mit den Medien der Fotografie und Installation. Ihre Werke zeichnen sich aus durch ein spannungsreiches Spiel von Licht und Schatten, Leere und Fülle, An- und Abwesenheit.
Ihre Fotografien sind diaphane Momentaufnahmen der Stille und Weite.
Die dargestellten Räume erzählen von Erinnerung und Vergänglichkeit.

Die Thematik des Memento, des Erinnerns – sich und andere – und der Spurensuche in Vergangenem und Gegenwärtigem ist eine Konstante in der Arbeit des frauen museum wiesbaden. Umso mehr freut sich das frauen museum wiesbaden daher, die Arbeiten von Nicole Ahland im Rahmen des Christa Moering Stipendiums zu präsentieren.

Evas Töchter

Ana Sojors Leidenschaft gilt dem Tanz, der Malerei und der spanischen Kultur. In ihren Ölgemälden verbindet sie diese Leidenschaften zu einer ausdrucksstarken Aussage.

Die Gemälde der Künstlerin sind im wahrsten Sinne des Wortes vielschichtig. Ana Sojor kombiniert Elemente der Ikonenmalerei, der Collage und der Objets trouvés auf eine besondere Weise. Ihre Bildträger findet sie in alten hölzernen Gebrauchsgegenständen: Holzplanken, Brotbackformen, Türen.
In der Ausstellung Evas Töchter sind neben dem tänzerischen Umfeld entsprungene Personen auch Frauengestalten des Alten Testaments zu sehen.

»In Madrid standen damals die Straßen voll mit Containern, in denen alte Möbel, Spiegel, Kirchenbänke usw. lagen und da ich wie alle Tanzstudenten nicht viel Geld hatte, benutzte ich alles, was bemalbar war als Untergrund. Daraus hat sich für mich ein ganz neuerer Umgang mit den Maluntergründen entwickelt. Ich benutze auch gerne Tapetenreste, Plakate etc., auf denen meine immer noch sehr spanisch und südländisch inspirierten Figuren zum Leben erwachen.« (Ana Sojor)

Erleben Sie in der Ausstellung »Evas Töchter« von Ana Sojor einen temperamentvollen und abwechslungsreichen Abend, in dem Gaby Herzog, Leiterin der Flamencoschule JALEO, die verschiedenen Stimmungen des Flamenco zeigt. Auf dem Programm wechseln sich ernste Tänze – wie die männliche Farruca –, kokette und fröhliche Tänze mit Hut und Fächer und Kastagnettenstücke, mit musikalischen Darbietungen ab. An der Gitarre wird Gaby Herzog von dem hervorragenden Gitarristen John Opheim begleitet. Albert Peter begleitet mit seinem einfühlsamen Gesang und Ulrike Schäfer sorgt für die rhythmische Untermalung. Die spanische Atmosphäre wird durch Tapas und landestypische Getränke abgerundet.

Mit einem Bildvortrag zeigt die Referentin einen neuen Weg im Tierschutz auf, der sowohl die Bedürfnisse der Menschen wie der Tiere berücksichtigt und das Engagement in Bezug zu dem gemeinsamen Lebensraum Natur stellt. Anhand zahlreicher Beispiele aus der praktischen Stiftungsarbeit erläutert Carola Otterstedt das Wesen des neuen Weges im Tierschutz und präsentiert Erkenntnisse kulturwissenschaftlicher Studien zur Mensch-Tier-Beziehung. Ausgewählte Beispiele der Mensch-Kuh-Beziehung zeigen ambivalente Verhaltensweisen gegenüber dem Tier und alternative Wege im Umgang mit Tieren auf.

Vision 2027 – Erfinde deine Zukunft
Weibliche Vorbilder in Handwerk, Technik und Naturwissenschaft

Die Ausstellung zeigt herausragende kreative Ideen und technische Erfindungen von Mädchen und jungen Frauen für die Zukunft Europas.
Ausgangspunkt für die Konzeption der Ausstellung waren die Ideen, die im Technik-Kreativ-Wettbewerb »Vision 2027 – Erfinde deine Zukunft« von Mädchen im Alter
von 10 bis 17 Jahren eingereicht wurden. Im Rahmen des Wettbewerbs konnten Schülerinnen technische Erfindungen in den Themenfeldern Umwelt und Energie, Mobilität und Verkehr sowie Gesundheit und Ernährung einreichen. Rund 200 Beiträge wurden eingesandt. In der Ausstellung werden Studiengänge und Ausbildungsberufe aus Technik, Handwerk und Naturwissenschaften präsentiert.
Role Models und berühmte Erfinderinnen der Vergangenheit und Gegenwart werden ebenfalls in dieser Ausstellung vorgestellt und sollen als ermutigende Beispiele für Mädchen und junge Frauen dienen.

An die Frauenmuseen weltweit:

Liebe Kolleginnen,

Bericht vom Treffen im Goethe-Institut Izmir am 29, August 2010:

In Izmir – Konak entsteht das erste Frauenmuseum der Türkei und des Vorderen Orients.

Es gibt schon ein Haus: Ein ehrwürdiges Palais von ca. 500 qm wird zur Zeit renoviert, es soll mit dem gegenüber liegenden wunderschönen Frauenbildungshaus eine Einheit bilden. Die Stadtverwaltung unterstützt das Projekt und integriert das Frauenmuseum in einen archäologisch-touristischen Gesamtplan.

Die stellvertretende Bürgermeisterin, Frau Güngör, erläuterte das Konzept, stellte die engagierten Frauen der Stadtverwaltung vor und die Museumskoordinatorin Frau Dilek Maktal-Canko, die für die Umsetzung sorgen wird.

Die Idee, in der 4-5 Millionenstadt Izmir ein Frauenmuseum zu gründen, war während der Konferenz zu Frau und Beruf in der Türkei und Deutschland im Frühjahr 2010 entstanden, bei der Gudrun Angelis das Frauenmuseum als Modell vorgestellt hatte. Der Bürgermeister von Izmir-Konak, Herr Dr. Hakan Tartan, war so begeistert von der Idee, das er sogleich tätig wurde. Schon im Juni reiste eine Delegation von 20 Damen nach Bonn, um das Frauenmuseum dort zu besichtigen.

Der „Gegen“besuch in Izmir brachte die Gewissheit:

Inmitten der Altstadt von Izmir wird ein Traum Wirklichkeit.

Die Eröffnung soll im September 2011 sein, zu der alle Frauenmuseen weltweit eingeladen werden.

Es soll auch eine Konferenz stattfinden. Zwar wurde in Argentinien vereinbart, dass die 4. Konferenz von Network oft Women’s Museums 2012 in Australien sein wird, dennoch sollten möglichst viele Kolleginnen die Sache der Frauenmuseen auch 2011 schon voranbringen.

Das Frauenmuseum, Bonn, wurde gebeten, mit Rat und Tat der Neugründung in Izmir zur Seite zu stehen.

Ebenfalls wurde vereinbart, dass von Marianne Pitzen eine Ausstellung zur Eröffnung zu sehen sein soll.

Introducing our Newest Team Member Welcome to Raeshma Razvi for Young Women Speak the Global Economy!
IMOW is delighted to welcome Raeshma Razvi as the lead project coordinator for our upcoming project, Young Women Speak the Global Economy. Raeshma is a filmmaker, writer and educator who has worked extensively with youth worldwide, helping them to tell their stories in many creative mediums. Raeshma has worked as the artistic director for the Documentary Project for Refugee Youth in New York, helping young refugees from West Africa and the Balkans create award-winning documentary films about their experiences; has facilitated conflict-transformation sessions with the organization Seeds of Peace; and is the founder of Silkworm Media, an organization dedicated to using the media and literary arts to bridge people and communities and inspire reflection and change. Raeshma’s experience will be invaluable as IMOW embarks on our next Project of Economica, Young Women Speak the Global Economy. The global online exhibitionwill explore young women’s hopes, challenges and ideas at a critical moment for the global economy. Groups of women aged of 18-25 from Denmark, the Philippines, the United States and the Sudan will contribute to the exhibition, sharing perspectives on the economy, careers, well-being and professional life with each other and with the museum’s global online audience. The new exhibition will showcase art, dynamic online conversations, and multi-media, and will be featured online at IMOW.org, as well as at events in each partner country! The museum’s partners for the Young Women Speaking the Economy exhibition will include Mills College for Women in Oakland, CA; the Ayala Museum and Miriam College for Women in the Philippines; the Women’s Museum and Aarhus University in Denmark; and the Sudanese Women’s Museum and Ahfad University for Women in the Sudan.
Reflections on “Global Leaders for Social Justice”
IMOW Executive Director Clare Winterton was thrilled to participate in last month’s “Global Leaders for Social Justice” program, run by the Global Women Leader’s Network. The week-long program brings together social justice leaders from around the world to expand their visions, leadership skills and capacity, as well as build community and momentum for social justice causes. This year’s participants included leaders working on issues from maternal health in Tanzania to women’s political participation Kenya and environmental justice in Pakistan. “I built incredible connections and insights that will enrich the museum’s exhibitions and programming, as well expanding my own perspective on possibilities for the museum” said Clare. We are a multidisciplinary research group from G. D’Annunzio University of
Chieti-Pescara, Italy. At the moment, we are carrying on a survey on female
stereotypes all around the world. In particular we wish to investigate
stereotypes related to some specific areas such as: emotion and temperament,
education, job, politics, body image and sexuality.

Starting from a first preliminary survey aiming to collect a list of
stereotypes from different countries, we have built a questionnaire which can
be filled in online at the following address:
