Gut leben ohne nix

The International Museum of Women is excited to unveil Economica: Women and the Global Economy. Our latest exhibition explores topics from business leadership and giving to microenterprise and grassroots solutions, sparking new, timely discussions about women’s experiences, contributions and challenges in this era of financial uncertainty.

Economica travels the world and asks, “What difference do women make in the world’s economy?” A series of evocative audio slideshows give the answers by showing women’s experiences from Morocco, China, Egypt, Bolivia, and beyond. These powerful visual stories provide entry points for examining different economic systems and values. Economica officially debuts on Saturday, October 17, the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty, but you can preview it now and:

  • EXPERIENCE striking stories of women in diverse economic circumstances: Learn how women’s funds redefine the pie in Nepal; look at the experience of migrant workers in China; explore whether microfinance actually alleviates poverty in Bolivia; get inspired by women’s empowerment Arab style in Qatar.
  • READ original essays from experts: Global Summit of Women President Irene Natividad makes the case for why investment in women is crucial to global economic recovery and CEO of Women for Women International Zainab Salbi argues that we need big picture solutions to complete an economic revolution for women.
  • DIALOGUE with leading scholars, activists and economists from around the world by contributing comments, stories, and artwork.
  • CONNECT on related themes in I.M.O.W.’s online Community.
  • TRANSFORM the way you look at the relationship between women and money in this new global online exhibition. Begin your tour of Economica: Women and the Global Economy now!

Eradication of Poverty Day

Join the fight against poverty and its root causes now

Economica: Women and the Global Economy officially launches on Saturday, October 17, 2009 in conjunction with the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty.

From October 16-18, 2009, millions of people will stand up worldwide and take part in a united action in support of the end of poverty and the fulfillment of the Millennium Development Goals. As women have been hit especially hard by current economic, food and climate crises, empowering women is the focus of this year’s campaign. More than 70 percent of those living in poverty around the world are women and children, and an important goal of I.M.O.W.’s new Economica exhibition is to raise awareness and inspire positive change. Kristof shared his first-hand experiences in the developing world and related many of the individual stories that inspired him and his wife and co-author, Sheryl WuDunn, to write this powerful and important book. Jane Wales, President and CEO of the World Affairs Council of Northern California, served as moderator. Look for a podcast of this event coming to www.imow.org soon!

    FULLY BOOKED:

50 Positionen zum Wandel des Raums

Ehemaliges Beethoven Hotel Bonn wird vom 14.11.2009 bis 28.02.2010 zur Kunsthalle

BONN.

    Presserundgang: Dienstag, 10. November 2009, 11 Uhr
    Vernissage: Samstag, 14. November 2009, 18 Uhr
    Ausstellungsdauer: 15. November 2009 – 28. Februar 2010
    Finissage: Sonntag, 28. Februar 2010
    Öffnungszeiten: M0, MI, DO, FR: 15.00 – 19.00 Uhr, SA, SO: 14.00 – 19.00

Anschrift: Ehemaliges Hotel Beethoven, Rheingasse 24-26, 53113 Bonn

    gezielt – verborgen.

Sjaak Beemsterboer und Christine Rühmann sind Vorsitzende des Vereins ML
MOVING LOCATIONS e.V. durch den das Projekt HB - HOTEL BEETHOVEN
    umgesetzt wird.

    Dear JASS friends,

Yesterday, we anxiously followed the news of the return to Honduras of democratically elected President Manuel Zelaya, who was ousted by a coup 13 weeks ago. His bold return, supported by the Brazilian government, was greeted by the mobilization of thousands of Hondurans from all over the country to the capital city of Tegucigalpa. Throughout last night and today, we have received numerous calls for help and solidarity from our Honduran allies as reports of brutal military and police crack-downs pour in. Citizens who have come to support Zelaya, or to call for the return to constitutional order, have been met with tear gas and bullets. Hundreds have been detained - many transported to a stadium in the capital city. The de facto government has shut down the media, blocked cell phone coverage and imposed mandatory curfews. Women from the Honduran Feminists in Resistance and numerous other Hondurans are under siege without food, water or electricity and are asking for solidarity from the international community.

We ask you to communicate with your government leaders, elected representatives and the international community to denounce the violence in Honduras. To those of you who are American citizens, we urge you to take action by contacting President Obama, the US State Department, and your Congressional Representatives, urging the US government to send a firm message to the coup leaders that the US will not accept the removal of a democratically-elected government. While the US government has condemned the coup publicly, it has not taken the decisive steps necessary - such as economic sanctions - to communicate unequivocally that we stand with democratic institutions and against violence.

We welcome your comments, and thank you for your action.

Sneak Preview of Economica: Women and the Global Economy

Contributor Riane Eisler says we need to redefine women’s roles in the new economy

I.M.O.W.’s upcoming online exhibition Economica: Women and the Global Economy will feature guest essays by prominent women re-envisioning the economy, as well as art and creative works from our online community. Exploring topics ranging from business leadership and philanthropy to microenterprise and grassroots solutions, Economica aims to spark new, timely discussions about women’s experiences, contributions and challenges in this era of financial crisis and opportunity.

Read an exhibition excerpt by I.M.O.W. Global Council member Riane Eisler. Eisler is president of the Center for Partnership Studies and author of The Real Wealth of Nations: Creating a Caring Economics:

    image

“Women worldwide need equal access to education, well-paying jobs and credit; we need to change laws and customs that discriminate against us simply because we were born female. But—and this is what I want to focus on—women need more than that.

In order to change the shameful fact that, worldwide, the mass of the poor and the poorest of the poor are women and their children, and in order to move to a more equitable and sustainable future, we not only need a bigger share of the present economic pie. To use a women’s metaphor, we have to bake a new economic pie.

This means thinking outside the box of conventional economic systems, whether capitalist or socialist. Our old economic systems were constructed without taking into account the female half of humanity; indeed, often without taking into account the humanity of either men or women. These old systems have failed to give visibility and adequate value to the most basic and important human work: the work of caring for people, starting in early childhood. Work without which there would be no workforce; work without which none of us would be alive; work that has traditionally been relegated to women, and is still considered inappropriate for so-called “real men.”

The current economic crisis offers a window of opportunity to re-examine and redefine what is and what isn’t productive work. We women must take leadership in this redefinition, not only for ourselves, but for everyone else as well—women, men and children. Indeed, this redefinition is essential as we move from the industrial to the post-industrial knowledge/information economy.”

Log on to www.imow.org to view the entire Economica exhibition beginning this October 17, 2009 and look for our Call for Community Submissions in the coming weeks!
