Attend I.M.O.W.’s Annual Benefit on April 27

Purchase tickets for Celebrating Change, our annual evening benefit to support the International Museum of Women! Join us on the evening of Tuesday, April 27, 2010 at the Metreon City View, a spectacular venue with the night-time skyline of San Francisco as our glittering backdrop.

We are excited to announce that Bisi Adeleye-Fayemi will be the evening’s featured speaker! Bisi is co-founder and Executive Director of the African Women’s Development Fund, an Africa-wide grantmaking foundation supporting the women’s movement in Africa, based in Ghana.

Celebrating Change will also include multi-media exhibits, live performances, music, food and wine from leading women chefs and producers. Purchase tickets today! Submit Your Photography for Picturing Power & Potential

Don’t Miss the April 10 Deadline

Submit your photography to I.M.O.W.’s Picturing Power & Potential, a new opportunity for photographers around the world to have their work displayed in an exhibition at San Francisco City Hall in the summer of 2010 and online at IMOW.org. Picturing Power & Potential is a collaborative project between I.M.O.W. and the San Francisco Arts Commission Gallery. The deadline for submissions is April 10.

A project of Economica, the exhibition will feature works centered on the theme of women and the global economy from artists across the globe. As many as fifty works will be selected for display in both the physical exhibition in San Francisco and in a special presentation online at I.M.O.W.’s Web site.

I.M.O.W. Hosts an Evening with Human Rights Watch

Save April 8 for a Special Speaker Event in San Francisco

Join I.M.O.W. for an evening conversation with Liesl Gerntholtz, director of the Women’s Rights Division for Human Rights Watch. Human Rights Watch is leading the charge on women’s rights around the world. Please join us to hear how Gerntholtz and her team are raising the cost of abuse to bring greater justice and security to women around the world.

This year alone Human Rights Watch has shed light on rape as a weapon of war; documented maternal mortality as a rights violation; and improved the lives of female domestic migrant workers on the ground.

Gerntholtz, just back from an emergency mission to Haiti, has uncovered increased risk of sexual violence for recently homeless women– reminding us that women are vulnerable to different kinds of rights violations that too often are forgotten.

Event Details: Thursday, April 8 in San Francisco at the Russ Building, 235 Montgomery Street, 12th Floor. Registration and wine reception starts at 6 pm. The program begins at 6:30 and will include a Q&A. Space is limited; reserve your ticket now. Pay Tribute to Women in Your Life with Women on the Map!

In celebration of International Women’s Day, I.M.O.W. launched a new, month-long campaign on March 8 to pay tribute to women around the world who are making a difference. Women on the Map! allows users to add women’s names, locations, and a brief message to the map; each woman then receives an email letting her know she’s been recognized. Inspiring tributes have already poured in from all over the world. Here are some that touched us:

Raji Trivedi, Ontario: “She is a loving, compassionate, daring and caring person who is strong-willed and determined to reach new heights. A good sister and best friend.”

Theresa Makuta, Lesotho: “She modeled self-worth & resilience to find my dream. She didn’t give in to poverty but reached out to the light & became inspiration to many of her generation at any age you can achieve your dream.”

Lailuma Nasiri, Kabul: “She is helping to change the world by assisting in creating the first violence again women unit in Afghanistan, and other important gender initiatives for women in her home country.”
